Why Are Dogue de Bardeaux So Expense?

Historically the Mastiff breeds can require higher purchase then other smaller dogs. There are several reasons.

Dogue de Bardeaux in particular have not been available as readily as they are now. In the past. This alone allowed the breeders that did have them to charge more then some of the other mastiffs. Still they are not listed in the numbers as other breeds are in the dog registeries. It wasn't often that you could find them without being papered and bred by registered breeders, although it has become easier lately to find mixed and possibly full-bred pups that are not in the AKC registered records. Of course if they are not registered the price can be significantly lower.

But here is the nitty gritty about breeding huge dogs. They tend to mature much slower then a smaller dog. With Bardeaux they aren't really considered fully grown until about 2 years of age. This is largely due to the needs of their growing joints. It would be really against the best interest of the female to breed before 2.

Again due to wanting to keep the female healthy and not put undo pressure on her joints and bones she she shouldn't be bred more then every 2 years. With good breeders wanting to insure the health of pups and mother's waiting 3 years would be optimal.

Then you have to face reality the average life span of a Bardeaux is listed at 6 to 8 years. During the parents lifetime there are lots of expenses such as high quality food and Veterinary care. Most breeders also have many tests done to certify the dogs medically like the hips. This is to assure that there will not be issues of hip dysplasia later in the dogs life. If a breeder plans to show the parents those are other considerations.

All told the first expense in purchasing your Bardeaux isn't going to be the biggest. If that initial investment is a deciding factor I would advise against this particular breed.

The first vet visit alone can bring buyers remorse. Due to their size every dog related cost can almost be doubled in comparing to a smaller breed. The spay and neuter surgery, medications, food, and toys are all going to be higher.

For those that are ready to make that investment though they are worth every penny.
