I’ve been texting a guy for a year and we don’t talk on the phone, can I truly like him and is this an actual relationship/friendship (we only text)?

It really depends on you two. Every relationship is made differently. What works for you won't work for me and all of that.

But I would encourage you to think over a few points before picking out wedding rings.

Why haven't you met in person, video chatted, or talked on the phone?

Have you asked the guy how he feels about the situation?

Have you discussed the topic of relationships?

Do you live in the same country?

How old are you?

How did you start talking?

All of these are going to lead you to the answer you seek.

Bonus note: this is my take on the situation if I assume a few details about your question. You met on a social app started talking and you aren't able to see each other due to your age or locations. You like talking enough via chat but you still don't feel comfortable asking him to video chat. You also are not confident enough to address your status as two people chatting.

I would say your friends with a high probability that you are being catfished.

You can solve the situation very quickly press for video chat or meet in person. Directly ask what your expectations are of the two of you talking. And if they still don't video chat or meet block them for the catfish they probably are.
